Through movements of everyday life, how do individuals fit into their environments?
In these static renders, I’ve placed an individual into contrasting environments to explore how a person’s surroundings shape their posture, mood, and sense of self.
In the indoor images set within a city building at night, there is a strong sense of vulnerability and isolation, despite the city bustling beyond the window. How can one feel alone in a city crowded with others? Perhaps everyone experiences loneliness together, each lit window in the surrounding buildings symbolizing an individual within their enclosed space—aware of others yet disconnected.
Creating these 3D scenes, a wider perspective reveals an empty room framing the individual, amplifying their solitude. The open pose reflects a willingness to be vulnerable—since no one else is present to observe—but also communicates sadness. The figure’s posture is relaxed yet hunched, head lowered, indicating contemplation and dissociation. While the main image realistically depicts the interior space, additional images emphasize the abstract feelings of disconnection and otherness, intensified by spotlighting and shifting city backgrounds.
Living in a densely populated city myself, I often experience similar feelings. Though the environment doesn’t directly cause this isolation, it encourages introspection and heightens my awareness of it.
Conversely, the outdoor images show the figure placed in an environment that radiates warmth and openness. Simply positioning the same individual outside drastically alters our perception. The figure’s body language becomes more closed—hands tucked into pockets, leaning against a wall—yet the emotional atmosphere feels lighter and less oppressive. There is a noticeable shyness, but also positive energy and openness. Although the person remains fundamentally unchanged, their mood improves markedly from exposure to open air and sunlight.
Personally, when I feel sunlight on my face, surrounded by enduring nature and free to move openly, my emotional state transforms. Even if alone, the sense of loneliness disappears.
How can subtle changes in setting profoundly transform an individual? These images explore contrasts: inside versus outside, city versus nature, confined versus free, and the resulting shifts in mood and identity. Placing the character outdoors presents them positively—as though simply existing within a vibrant, living world can elevate one’s sense of self.
