Wood Sculptures

Structure, Ambition, and Emerging Strength

To create these three sculptures, I started with small and large individual pieces to collage and fit together, and then I explored how I can carve those shapes to create more organic forms that connect to life.

During the process I asked myself some questions:

  • What can I create only using the scrap and reclaimed wood available?
  • How can solid structural forms be related to human expression and spirit?
  • And how can the presence of these sculptures bring people together, and create time for contemplation and harmony?

The sculptures each seem solid and dominant in the way they stand. With the natural wood forms, I imitate nature and its solidarity. Each element builds upon a monumental form and relates to the curves and proportion of the body, yet are still structural and confident, strengthened by being together.

I relate this to my own desire for support and certainty in community, while still being able to express myself in the movements of life freely.
